Trump at Super Bowl 2025:

Donald Trump played high school football while still a student. He owned a franchise in an upstart competitor to the NFL as a business mogul and later sued the current league. He denigrated athletes participating in a social justice movement who took a knee during the national anthem as president.

He added to that convoluted history with Sunday’s sport by being the first president in office to go to a Super Bowl.

Following his arrival at the Superdome, the Republican president visited participants in the honorary coin toss including police department officials and emergency responders after jetting from Florida to New Orleans. Relatives of victims of a fatal New Year’s Day terrorist attack in the historic French Quarter also attended.

Recent orders from Trump on the termination of initiatives supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion across the federal government have some detractors viewing the league’s choice as a reaction to the Republican president’s actions. 

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, meanwhile, said the league’s goals for diversity do not contradict the Trump administration’s initiatives to terminate the federal government’s DEI projects.

Attending the Super Bowl in 1992, Trump believes the Chiefs will prevail thanks in large part to Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

 “I guess you have to say that when a quarterback wins as much as he’s won, I have to go with Kansas City,” Trump remarked in a taped interview with Fox News Channel’s Bret Baier that ran on the pregame show. 

According to Trump, Mahomes “truly knows how to win.  He is a really outstanding quarterback.

During his student years at the New York Military Academy, the president participated in football.  He owned the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League while a New York businessman in the early 1980s.  Trump had filed lawsuits aiming at a USFL and NFL merger. 

The USFL dissolved at last.

Throughout his first tenure as president, Trump and the NFL ran across friction.

Players kneeling during the national anthem to call attention to social or racial injustice infuriated Trump  Beginning in 2016, then San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeling during “The Star-Spangled Banner” at a Denver exhibition game set off that movement.

Through social media and other public remarks, Trump urged team owners to dismiss anyone who took a knee and insisted that athletes represent the national anthem.

“Wouldn’t you like to see one of these NFL owners when someone disrespects our flag say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. 

Outright!  Trump declared to loud cheers at a 2017 Hunstville, Alabama, rally, “She’s fired.”

Following his arrival with a group of some of his closest Republican allies in Congress, including Sens.

Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott of South Carolina, Trump watched Sunday’s game from a suite.  R-La., House Speaker Mike Johnson, had also mentioned he would be in the suite with the President. 

Trump saluted at the singing of the national anthem. 

The relatives of Mahomes dropped over to see him.

His passion for sports transcends football.  Trump hosts events and owns several golf courses; he is a passionate golfer. 

Weeks after returning a second term, he sponsored boxing events at his former Atlantic City,

New Jersey casinos and went to a UFC event at Madison Square Garden. On Sunday in Florida, Trump went golfing with Tiger Woods, the White House stated.

Trump keeps ties with Generals players Herschel Walker and Doug Flutie, while several NFL team owners have given to his campaigns.Trump has nominated Walker to be ambassador to the Bahamas and supported his failed attempt as the Republican nominee for a U.S. Senate seat from Georgia in 2022.

Last week, Trump signed an order aiming at government funds for schools failing to comply, therefore blocking transgender people and girls from participating in women’s sports.

Before the game, Trump stated in a statement the coaches, players, and staff of the Chiefs and Eagles “represent the hopes and dreams of our Nation’s young athletes as we restore safety and fairness in sports and equal opportunities among their teams.”
