In the first trailer for Amazon MGM Studios’ sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary movie, Ryan Gosling doesn’t seem to think that going to space sounds like a lot of fun. The movie that comes out on March 20, 2026, was directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The movie is based on Andy Weir’s book of the same name and stars Sandra Hüller and Milana Vayntrub.
The main character in Project Hail Mary is Ryland Grace (Gosling), a middle school teacher who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of his past or how he got there. He meets a mysterious alien who is also trying to save his own species while on a mission in space that he must complete in order to save Earth from a possible disaster.
In April, CinemaCon showed the first footage from the movie, which included Hüller giving a dire warning. “If we don’t do anything, everything on this planet will die.” Gosling doesn’t want to volunteer after hearing that the person chosen for the dangerous mission might not come back. “I know what’s at stake,” he says. “But I belong in the classroom.”
The movie was directed by Lord and Miller and is based on Drew Goddard’s script, which is based on Weir’s 2021 book.
Lord and Miller haven’t directed a movie since 2014’s 22 Jump Street with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. Project Hail Mary is their first release as directors since then. Ron Howard took over for the filmmakers who were working on the 2018 movie Solo: A Star Wars Story. Gosling joked about Lord and Miller at CinemaCon, saying, “They are only happy if they make you do the very rare and coveted laugh-cry.”

What day does “Project Hail Mary Movie” come out?
“Project Hail Mary,” a sci-fi adventure movie from Amazon MGM Studios that stars Ryan Gosling, will come out in theatres across the country on March 20, 2026.
When was the book “Project Hail Mary” published?
Andy Weir wrote the sci-fi suspense novel “Project Hail Mary,” which the movie of the same name is based on. It came out on May 4, 2021.
Weir’s “The Martian,” another sci-fi book, was made into a movie in 2015 by Ridley Scott with Matt Damon in the lead role.
The New Project Hail Mary Trailer Shows Us Rocky, a Character from the Book That Fans Love?
Rocky shows up in Weir’s book after a while, and his appearance (and later friendship with Grace) is a bit of a surprise. What started out as another Martian-like solo quest for a human hero quickly turns into a high-stakes buddy adventure comedy.
And that’s what makes the short clips of Rocky we see in the movie trailer so shocking. We don’t get a full view of Rocky, but we do see his arms and hands (and maybe his feet) in several shots. There are also signs that Rocky is a friendly alien. And that’s probably for the best.
Fans of Rocky (yes, there are a lot of them, as shown by the cottage industry of fan-made Rocky t-shirts, art, and merchandise) get to see one of the book’s main characters for the first time. People who don’t know the book also get a reason to think that Project Hail Mary is more than just The Martian reloaded.
Project Hail Mary is a lot like Weir’s previous bestseller, The Martian, which was later made into a blockbuster movie with Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain. Both stories have lonely main characters who go on life-or-death missions far from Earth, complicated (and fun!) scientific ideas, and a lot of space drama.
Rocky is the main thing that sets this apart. In The Martian, Mark Watney is left alone (that’s kind of the point of the story) to “science the shit” out of his desperate situation. In Project Hail Mary, the bond between Rocky and Grace adds another layer of sadness, humour, and drama to the story.
As the story goes on, the two characters use their different skills and knowledge to deal with what seems like impossible odds. The ending is both shocking and totally fitting. The trailer shows just the right amount of Rocky to get both new and die-hard fans excited for next year, while still leaving enough out to keep people guessing and wondering when the movie comes out.
