Tommy Paul made headlines at the French Open 2025.
Tommy Paul made headlines at the French Open 2025, not just for sliding his way into the second round, but also for a wild off-court revelation: his Ford F-150 truck was repossessed mid-tournament during his Rome run. The American No. 12 seed overcame a shaky start and strong winds to defeat Danish lucky loser Elmer Moller in four sets, while also winning fans over with his candid storytelling and sense of humor. From clay-court mastery to unexpected life lessons, Paul’s Paris journey is off to an unforgettable start.
After spinning his wheels in the first set, Tommy Paul got back on track, sped up his swing, and made it to the second round of Roland Garros for the fifth time. In spite of a rough wind, Paul beat Elmer Moller of Denmark 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 at French Open 2025.
Two Americans, No. 28-seeded Brandon Nakashima and No. 32-seeded Alex Michelsen, lost on Court No. 14. That same day, Paul and his old buddy Reilly Opelka came back to win in round two. The score was 1-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 for Opelka over Australian Rinky Hijikata.
Paul, the 12th seed, will play Marton Fucsovics, a 33-year-old Hungarian, in the second round and try to keep moving forward. When it comes to dirt, Paul is better than most American guys French open.
The 2015 Roland Garros boys’ champion learned to play tennis on American green clay (Har-Tru) at a health club and tennis school in Greenville, N.C., that his parents owned. When asked today what it takes to slide well, Paul said it takes court sense and quick choices.
Paul told the press in Paris, “It’s definitely helpful to be able to move and slide with confidence.” “I mean, you should slide and hit sometimes and hit and slide other times.”
“It’s very important to be able to make those choices very quickly.” Moving around is pretty much everything in this sport. It’s really important. You need to be able to move around really well. It could help me for sure. I’m not sure if I’ve always been the best at moving on clay, but I feel like I’ve came a long way.
Paul can move quickly on any surface and has learned to use his speed as an attacking tool instead of a skill for getting things back. During his run to the Rome final four, Paul made news around the world when he said that his beloved Ford F-150 truck had been taken from his driveway. He watched the shocking event on security camera video while he was in Rome.
The 28-year-old Florida resident said today that he moved banks and forgot to change his auto-pay information. Paul did say that he was surprised at how quickly the Repo Man did his work.
“I forgot to set up auto pay on my truck after I changed banks.” I think I missed about three payments, Paul told the press in Paris. “They took it.” “I had no idea that was how it went.”
After some digital detective work, Paul found out that his truck had been recovered and not stolen as he had first thought. “I’m scrolling back to see what happened to my truck.” “What the hell is going on?” Paul said. “My car is being towed away by a truck.” At first, I thought it had been stolen.
“Autopay wasn’t the first thing that came to mind (laughter).” But yeah, ended up being sent back. Paul has changed in two ways since he got back his Ford F-150 truck: he is more careful about auto-pay, and he watches a lot of Repo Reality TV shows.
Paul said, “I didn’t know how fast they would come and take it, like in the middle of the night.” “Now I watch all these repo shows where police come in at 1 a.m. with swoop trucks.” It’s definitely a funny thing to go through. It’s even stranger to have been in Europe at the time. We did get it back, though.

When they played all-court tennis, Paul beat Sinner 6-1 in the first set in the Rome semifinals, but the world No. 1 beat the American in 12 of the last 15 games to win the match. An honest Sinner not only beat Paul, but he also “exposed” him a bit. Paul hopes to learn from his loss in Rome and at least follow up last year’s third-round run in Paris.
There were some things he did that made me look a little weak. Paul said, “I don’t want to get too deep into it because I don’t want to give it all away.” “I mean, he did some great things to change the game.”
“I wasn’t able to adapt as well as he did.” He got a lot better. He must have won nine or ten games in a row, which hurts in the middle of the match. Early in the week, someone asked me, “How do you feel after winning the first set 6-1?” In the beginning, I told them I felt great, but then I lost nine games in a row. I didn’t have to deal with that for long.
