Recalled brown cage-free eggs and brown certified organic eggs, with sell-by dates ranging from March 4, 2025, to June 4, 2025, were distributed to retail locations in California and Nevada, including Save Mart, FoodMaxx, Lucky, Smart & Final, Safeway, Raleys, Food 4 Less, and Ralphs.
The eggs were also dispersed to Walmart locations in California, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Wyoming, New Mexico, Nebraska, Indiana, and Illinois, with sell-by dates ranging from March 4, 2025, to June 19, 2025.
According to a news release issued on Saturday, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are actively investigating a multistate Salmonella outbreak that is associated with at least 1.7 million eggs.
The FDA reported that the August Egg Company distributed brown cage-free and brown certified organic eggs to retailers in nine states—California, Nevada, Washington, Arizona, Nebraska, New Mexico, Illinois, Indiana, and Wyoming—from February 3 to May 15. The Hilmar, California-based distribution company issued an announcement on Friday, recalling 1.7 million eggs.
Retailers like Walmart and Safeway, along with a variety of brands, sold these eggs. The sell-by dates of the eggs range from March 4 to June 19. The CDC has reported that the outbreak has infected 79 individuals in New Jersey, Kentucky, Nebraska, Nevada, Arizona, Washington state, and California. Reports indicate that no fatalities have occurred, and at least 21 individuals have sought hospitalisation.
“The CDC has stated that the true number of sick individuals is likely to be significantly higher than the reported number, and this outbreak may not be restricted to the states with known illnesses.” “This is due to the fact that a significant number of individuals recover without receiving medical attention and are not screened for Salmonella.” Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause illness in individuals if they consume contaminated food and water or if they come into contact with animals, their faeces, or the environment in which they reside, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Every year, approximately 1.35 million infections occur in the United States, making it “a leading cause of food-borne illness, hospitalisations, and deaths in the United States and worldwide.” The bacteria can cause symptoms such as diarrhoea, fever, and gastrointestinal cramps within six hours to six days of consumption. Salmonella can cause severe illness in individuals with compromised immune systems, the elderly, and children under the age of five.
The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is advising individuals who possess the recalled eggs to either discard them or return them to the retailer from which they were purchased. Businesses that possess recalled eggs are prohibited from selling or serving them, and they are required to sanitise any item or surface that has been in contact with them.
After becoming aware of the salmonella issue, the August Egg Company initiated the process of transporting its eggs to an “egg-breaking facility” for pasteurisation and pathogen elimination. “August Egg Company’s internal food safety team is also conducting its rigors review to determine the necessary measures to prevent this situation from reoccurring,” the company stated in a statement.
“We are dedicated to the comprehensive resolution of this issue and the implementation of all requisite corrective measures to prevent its recurrence.”
The United States is presently experiencing multiple salmonella outbreaks, including this one. Due to a salmonella outbreak that has resulted in the hospitalisation of 16 individuals and the illness of 45 in 18 states, the FDA issued a recall of cucumbers that were grown by Bedner Growers and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales last month.
The cucumbers are currently the subject of an ongoing FDA investigation.
